With a population of 87,, Launceston is the second most populous city in Tasmania after the state capital, Hobart , and the twelfth-largest non-capital city in Australia. Settled by Europeans in March , Launceston is one of Australia’s oldest cities and it has many historic buildings. Launceston also had the first use of anaesthetic in the Southern Hemisphere , it was the first Australian city to have underground sewers , and it was the first Australian city to be lit by hydroelectricity.
The first inhabitants of the area of Launceston were largely nomadic Aboriginal Tasmanians believed to have been part of the North Midlands Tribe. The first white visitors did not arrive until , when George Bass and Matthew Flinders were sent to explore the possibility that there was a strait between Australia and Van Diemen’s Land now Tasmania. The first significant colonial settlement in the region dates from , when the commandant of the British garrison Lt.
William Paterson , and his men set up a camp on the current site of George Town. A few weeks later, the settlement was moved across the river to York Town , and a year later was moved to its definitive position where Launceston stands. The geographical area in which Launceston is now located was previously occupied by the Letteremairrener people. The Letteremairrener country encompasses most of the Tamar Valley region.

Tasmania’s gambling monopoly holder Federal Hotels says it will reopen gaming rooms in less than two weeks. The decision comes a day after Premier Peter Gutwein announced Tasmania was now free of active coronavirus cases, earning the state an early exit from stage two restrictions. Federal, which owns numerous Tasmanian hotels and hospitality businesses, closed its pub and casino operations in March as part of the coronavirus shutdown, with the loss of 1, jobs.
Company spokesman Daniel Hanna said “we’ve been waiting for this for some time and it’s good to get businesses open and good to get our people back and working again”. From June 26, the group will begin a staged return to business, including “practices around social distancing”, Mr Hanna said. Federal, which operates the Wrest Point and the Country Club casinos, will delay opening their “tourism-focused businesses” until “the borders are open”, Mr Hanna said. Glenorchy Mayor Kristie Johnston — whose municipality includes an area known as “the golden mile”, for its proliferation of gaming venues — said her constituents had saved millions of dollars during the three-month closure of gaming in the state.
It is not just Glenorchy where the savings have added up, anti-gambling advocates argue. Ms Webb said she was concerned that Tasmania could follow what’s happened in other states after machines are turned back on. She said the community should “absolutely reconsider when we turn these machines back on”.
